Bathroom Remodel Failure (to Launch)

When I met Jeff and Amanda, they had given up. Their bathroom was in disrepair and their patience was exhausted. They suffered from lack of direction and extreme indecisiveness. I learned during several discovery calls that they had hired numerous contractors over the years, only to run out of money or have the contractor move onto another job because they could not agree on finish materials. I also learned the unfinished bathroom had become a major issue in their relationship.

Over the weeks to follow, we discussed their ideal vision for the space. We looked at pictures, brainstormed ideas and explored several options. We ultimately settled on a minimalist concept with a touch of natural color.

We began by removing most of the work performed by previous contractors. As I explained to Jeff and Amanda, we cannot warranty work performed by other contractors without a thorough inspection. Contractor continuity is critical to project success! We started by jackhammering the floor to lower the drain 3" and create a "curbless" walk-in shower. Next, we removed the dry rot and waterproofed the floor and walls. We replaced the built-in cast iron bathtub with a standalone tub and faucet. We framed in an exterior door, laser-leveled the entire floor and installed a new vanity. Lastly, we designed and installed a custom tile layout in the shower.

Jeff and Amanda are absolutely thrilled we were able to fulfill their vision. And we are honored to have given new life to their home, and remove a source of contention from their relationship.

Fugly Kitchen Remodel
with Barb

Barb loved her house. She loved her giant backyard and her fruit trees and her garden. She was recently retired, and spent a lot of time on her self-assigned honey-do list.

Barb also had a group of friends that would meet several times a week to exercise and chitchat. The ladies would take turns hosting at their houses... all except Barb. For some reason, it always seemed like something would come up when it was her turn. The truth came out after a short time on our first discovery call: she loved her house but she HATED her kitchen! She was so embarrassed by her outdated kitchen that she didn't want visitors.

Once we figured out the cause of her pain, we started working on the remedy. Her vision was clear: she wanted a space that was light and bright, and would serve as the gathering point in her house. We started by demolishing the old cabinets. We then updated the electrical and added recessed lighting. We installed all new cabinetry, new sink/faucet, new countertops and new flooring.

Barb is overjoyed by the way her new kitchen has revitalized her home. And we are equally happy to have played a role in that transformation.

Prefab to Fab
with Joe & Renee

Joe and Renee initially called us for an entirely different reason. After we determined the best way to approach their original problem, we heard "oh by the way..." and found ourselves in the master bathroom. We discovered a poorly constructed space that had inevitably fallen apart. The drain in the prefabricated shower stall had rotted away and the floor was almost one inch out of level. The worst part was the entire household had been using one bathroom for the past several months!

The first thing we did was sit down to discuss their ideal master bathroom. One major theme was SPACE. Joe stands at 6' 7" so he constantly struggles for room, no matter the environment. Renee loves her beauty products and requires ample area to spread out. Based on their needs, we started by meticulously designing their bathroom. We included a custom shower tile layout and locations for every outlet and switch, incorporating their feedback throughout the process.

Ultimately we decided to knock down an adjacent wall and remove the 18" drop ceiling. This gave Joe and Renee a 50% bigger shower and the ability to fit a 48" vanity. We also built a 36" wide shower niche to fit a lifetime supply of conditioner. We rebuilt the rotted floor, added recessed and LED lighting and installed a pocket door on the adjacent -- albeit smaller -- closet.

Joe and Renee have relinquished the guest bathroom to the rest of the house and are back to enjoying their master bedroom. The pain is gone and life has returned to normal. They are happy with the outcome but, more importantly, they are equally satisfied with the experience. We are honored to have spent the time designing, talking, laughing, building and sharing that experience with them.
